Global mineral processing and materials handling solution and services provider to the cement and minerals industry FLSmidth is increasing its activity level in Ghana.

“We are elevating our profile in the West African market,” says FLSmidth minerals-pro- cessing capital sales and marketing manager Terence Osborn. The company has already completed projects across West Africa that have involved installing and refurbishing equipment at mines in Ghana owned by global gold-mining companies.

The company is currently represented in Ghana through Accra-based trading company Holdtrade, headed by Frank Roberts.

“Roberts is our eyes and ears in the Ghanaian market, if you like, and he visits our Ghana, Burkina Faso and Tanzania customers regularly to determine their aftermarket support requirements,” says Osborn.

“We would like to grow our presence in West Africa and, given the amount of equipment we have already supplied to projects in Ghana, it is the logical place for us to start,” he continues.

The company is considering expanding its service foot- print not only in Ghana, but also throughout Africa. In South Africa, for example, the company is in the process of establishing a ‘Supercentre’, says Osborn.

This centre will comprise a spares store, a refurbishment workshop, a training facility as well as an outside storage facility, which the company will use to house its large fleet of cranes.

FLSmidth is also planning the expansion of its service footprint in Zambia, Southern Africa, as a short-term plan.

“Where we see nodes of high activity, we want to establish a company presence. This year we plan to develop a presence in Zambia to support mining operations on the Zambian and Democratic Republic of Congo copperbelt,” he explains.

The company provides mining companies with services such as plant audits and inspections, upgrades, and equipment maintenance and refurbishment.
